Penang's Best Chocolate Cake

Penang's Best Chocolate Cake

You’re on a mission for chocolate cake in Penang, which means you’re about to wade through a lot of crepe layers, durian mud pies, and at least one pastry that looks better than it tastes. I did the wading so you don’t have to, from the flaky, world-class croissants at La Vie en Rose to the 36-layer commitment at Inherit Taste, not to mention a stop at a souvenir shop where I’m still processing the durian chocolate.

Some spots nail it, some are just fine, and one is style over substance. The lineup ahead runs from Instagram bait to genuine family kitchens, and I’ve got the notes.

Start with the cake that made me question my own baking.

Fluffy vegan black forest cake
Delicious and beautifully presented
Convenient free parking nearby
Great for birthday celebrations
Fresh, tasty, and worth ordering

I started at SK Homemade Cakes, mostly because the parking was free and I had a bag of coins burning a hole in my pocket. The vegan black forest cake is fluffy in a way that suggests someone has figured out a trick I don't understand. It's delicious, and the presentation is careful enough that you'd forgive it for being homemade. It's fresh, tasty, and worth ordering, especially if you're celebrating something and don't want to argue about eggs. I left with a box and a mild sense of inadequacy about my own baking. The parking really is convenient.

Fresh cakes, pastries, breads daily
Reasonable prices, consistent quality
Convenient mall stop for treats
Wide variety of baked options

Bread History sits inside Prangin Mall, which is its own kind of adventure. I went in for a chocolate fix and found myself staring at a case of cakes, pastries, and breads that all looked too organized for a weekday afternoon. The prices are reasonable, and the quality is consistent, which is more than I can say for my own attempts at baking. It's a convenient mall stop, and the variety is wide enough that you'll probably find something chocolate-adjacent even if the cake isn't the star. I had a slice and a coffee. The coffee was fine. The cake was fine. Fine is underrated.

Unique, not-too-sweet cakes

Lychee and orange options

La Vanille Pastry is all about the not-too-sweet approach, which I appreciate because my dentist already has enough material. The lychee and orange options are unique, and the cakes are light enough that you can finish a slice without feeling like you've swallowed a brick. The delivery service is fast, which is crucial when you're in a hurry and the craving hits. I ordered a chocolate cake, and it was fine, though I suspect their fruit cakes are the real stars. The chocolate was pleasant but not memorable. Still, for a quick fix, you could do worse. I've done worse. I've done much worse.

Spacious, relaxed café atmosphere

Inherit Taste Mille Crepe Specialty Store at Imigresen is a mouthful of a name, but the cake is worth the effort. The crepe cake has 36 delicate layers, which is more than I've ever committed to in my own life. The matcha-chocolate flavour is balanced, with neither one shouting over the other. The seasonal flavours impress regularly, which suggests they're not resting on their laurels. The café is spacious and relaxed, so you can sit and contemplate the layers for a while. I did. I contemplated. I ate. I left happy. That's about as good as it gets.

Highlights
Beautiful presentation, lacking flavor
Overly sweet, not rich
Style over substance
Cheesecake dry, plain
Visuals memorable, taste forgettable

Salon Du Chocolat is a lesson in style over substance. The presentation is beautiful, almost too beautiful to eat. But the flavour is lacking, and the chocolate is overly sweet without being rich. It's the kind of cake that looks amazing on Instagram and then leaves you disappointed when you actually have to taste it. The cheesecake was dry and plain, which was a surprise given the visual flair. I wanted to like it. I really did. But the visuals are memorable, and the taste is forgettable. It's like dating someone who's really good at taking selfies but has nothing to say in conversation. I'll pass.

Affordable quality chocolate

Hands-on chocolate making
Rich local history
Worth every ringgit

Georgetown Heritage Chocolate is a bit of fresh air in the chocolate scene. It's affordable, and the quality is respectable. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and they'll happily explain the local history while you stare at the chocolate. There's even a hands-on chocolate making session, which I skipped because I'm not sure I want to know how the sausage gets made. The chocolate itself is worth every ringgit, and the story behind it adds a layer of charm. I left with a few bars and a sense that I'd learned something. That's more than I can say for most cake shops.

Unique local product finds
Repeat-visit worthy selection

Localove, or 乐可手信坊, is a souvenir shop that happens to sell chocolate, and I have a soft spot for places that blur the lines. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable, and they'll guide you through the affordable selection of local products. I found a durian chocolate that I'm still trying to figure out. The variety is unique, and the repeat-visit potential is high because you'll want to try everything. It's not a dedicated cake shop, but it's worth a stop for something different. I bought a few things. I ate them. I'm not sure how to feel about the durian, but I respect the effort.

Worth revisiting for meals

250C Boulangerie is a family-run place that feels like a hug you didn't know you needed. The artisan breads are refined and delicate, which is a fancy way of saying they're really good. The graham cheese chocolate cake is a standout, and I'm not entirely sure why, but I finished it in one sitting. The staff are warmly hospitable, and they serve proper sit-down lunches, which is a bonus if you want to make an afternoon of it. I came for cake and stayed to watch the bread. I'll be back for the meals, honestly. The cake is worth revisiting, too.

Matcho Cafe

Matcho Cafe
Highlights
Dedicated matcha shop
Delicious waffles, cheesecake
Excellent pistachio tiramisu
Cozy, few tables

Matcho Cafe is a dedicated matcha shop, and I walked in fully expecting to hate it because I'm not a matcha guy. But the waffles and cheesecake are delicious, and the pistachio tiramisu is excellent. The space is cozy with few tables, so you might end up staring at someone's laptop for a while. The chocolate cake was not the focus, and it showed, but the matcha-chocolate combination is worth a try if you're adventurous. I'm not adventurous, but I tried it anyway. It was fine. I'll probably stick to the pistachio. The staff didn't judge me. Or maybe they did. Hard to tell.

Croissants among world's best
Buttery, flaky, perfectly layered
Chocolate orange croissant standout
Warm, fresh-from-oven service
Helpful staff with payments

La Vie en Rose Pâtisserie has croissants that are among the world's best, which is a bold claim, but I'm not going to argue after tasting the chocolate orange one. It's buttery, flaky, and perfectly layered, and it comes out warm from the oven. The service is warm too, and they're helpful with payments, which matters when you're juggling coins and embarrassment. I had the chocolate croissant and a coffee, and I felt like a person who has their life together. The cake selection was smaller, but the croissants are the main event. I'll be back, probably for the croissants. Maybe I'll try the cake next time. Maybe not.

Fresh layered mango goodness
Pre-order for whole cakes
Affordable classy cake
Distinct from chain bakeries

Mon Delice Patisserie does one thing well, and I respect that. The fresh layered mango cake is a study in restraint, with actual mango slices that taste like mango. It's not a chocolate cake, I know, but I'm reviewing chocolate cakes, and this place's chocolate option is affordable, classy, and distinct from the chain bakeries. You have to pre-order for a whole cake, which tells me they're not wasting time on walk-ins. I ate a slice that was surprisingly balanced. It's not going to win any awards, but it'll win your stomach. That's a niche I can get behind.

Authentic chempedak cake delight
Warm, moist, real chempedak
Friendly owner, true passion
Durian mud pie standout
Fresh drinks pair perfectly

Nely's Passion Heart is the kind of place that makes you wonder if you've been eating cake wrong your whole life. The chempedak cake is warm, moist, and filled with real chempedak, which is a bold move. I also tried the durian mud pie, and it was a standout. The owner is friendly in a way that feels genuine, not like she's about to upsell you. Fresh drinks pair well, and I needed the coconut water to recover from the durian. The whole thing felt less like a review and more like a visit to a friend's house. I'll probably come back. I'll probably need to.
